Project Overview
Quanta Aviation Services (QAS) was contracted for the installation of transmission lines across three structures at Camp Washington. The project involved pulling eight lines, six conductors and two static lines, using a combination of traditional crane setups and UAS technology. The IF1200 drone, equipped with a quick release mechanism, was utilized to efficiently assist in the installation process, reducing manual labor and expediting the deployment of pilot lines.
Scope of Work
QAS deployed UAS technology to assist in pulling transmission lines across spans of 800 feet. The IF1200 drone was flown to carry and release pilot lines at designated anchor points. Cranes were deployed at all three structures with QEWs operating in baskets to secure the lines. The IF1200 UAS transported and positioned the ¼-inch pilot line between structures. The tensioner system, managed by ground personnel, ensured proper alignment and securement of conductors.
Impact
The integration of UAS technology in this transmission line installation resulted in significant improvements in efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. The use of drones to transport the pilot line minimized the need for workers to manually traverse hazardous areas, reducing the risk of injury. The reduced need for manual labor, crane time, and extended work hours resulted in lower overall project costs. The success of this project demonstrated QAS’s ability to integrate UAS technology into large-scale utility operations, providing faster, safer, and more efficient solutions for transmission line installations.
