80,000 Poles in Months: Scaling UAS Telecom Inspection Across California

Project Overview

Quanta Aviation Services (QAS) was contracted for a large-scale telecom utility pole inspection across California. The project required high-efficiency data collection using UAS technology, focused on capturing NADIR images, 360-degree orbits, and pole tag photos where accessible. To meet an aggressive timeline, QAS scaled to more than 25 pilots and inspected nearly 80,000 poles in a matter of months, with each pilot averaging 200 poles per day.

Scope of Work

QAS pilots deployed across multiple regions of California, capturing NADIR imagery for structural assessment, 360-degree orbit imagery for detailed analysis, and pole tag documentation where accessible. Standardized flight procedures kept data consistent and high-quality across all inspections. Pilots prioritized production so vegetation obstructions or inaccessible tags would not delay the overall assessment, uploading data daily and completing check-ins through the Tailboard app while working six days a week.

Impact

The project demonstrated QAS’s ability to scale UAS operations rapidly, completing nearly 80,000 inspections far faster than traditional methods would allow. Standardized drone inspections ensured consistent, high-quality data while minimizing operational costs and worker exposure to hazardous environments. The effort reinforced QAS’s position as a leader in high-volume UAS-based telecom inspection and modern utility asset management.
